Compass partners  began their evaluation careers in 1996 at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNC-G) and in 1999 helped to establish an evaluation unit in the School of Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH). In 2001, partners established an independent evaluation-consulting firm dedicated to working jointly with organizations to meet the evaluation challenges that ensure developing and sustaining successful programs.

Compass grounds all of its work in a collaborative approach. Collaborative evaluation engages key program stakeholders throughout the evaluative process and promotes expanding the evaluation expertise of program staff.

Compass evaluators begin each project by first developing a thorough understanding of the activities and goals of the program as well as any issues and concerns of the client. With that understanding in mind, we work together with program staff to tailor an evaluation plan that that is useful for improving programs, informing decisions about future programming, and demonstrating program effectiveness. At the same time, we are careful to balance our collaborative approach with independence and thoughtful adherence with accepted professional standards. Our commitment to our clients is to add value beyond expectations.
